Before the industrial revolution, before the clatter of carts on cobblestone streets, in the idyllic time of pastoral man, there were few loud sounds and certainly not the almost constant din we endure today. Hearing loss
is often thought of as a sudden event caused by a terrifically loud sound. But the truth is, our hearing is compromised bit by bit throughout our lives and by common sounds you would not think of as threatening. About all we can do to protect our hearing is to wear hearing protection whenever we know we are going to be in a loud situation. You may even consider carrying hearing protection on your person at all times. Small thimble sized hearing protection in the form of compressible foam can be carried easily in your pocket. And, of course, if you work in a loud factory, always wear your hearing protection. The information provided here is general in nature and should not substitute for the care and advice of a licensed health care provider.
